He gave the flavour to the dialogues wherever necessary without disrupting my ideas.

Cast:- Jennifer character is written with Aymee in mind since I knew her interest in acting and her father John Balog is a good friend of mine. Al sotomayor already played in my another movie and I wanted to use his talents. Kimberly Kurus (Mom) is a professional actress and Kyle Rivera(Dad) is my office collegue. They all came to rehearsals without fail and cooperated with great enthusiasm.

Production:- Chris Freilich is the cinematographer who gave those beautiful images exactly as I imagined. Before going for the shoot, I videographed the whole movie on locations and Played it for him. I took the photographs (a.k.a) storyboards also so that it will be easy for us during shooting. Sam wells, highly experienced professional is the assistant cinematographer, Gaffer. Sudhar Krishnamachary took care of assisting me in the whole shoot and he noted all the shots, retakes & arranged half of things whatever necessary for the shoot. Harini took care of production design and Veera took stills for the movies and assisted the Camera crew. The movie is shot with Panasonic DVX 100A (Thanks to Kumar) and Chris brought the whole lighting equipment and Dolly.

Post production:- The movie is edited in Avid and Joseph Maksimow is the Editor, who gave his valuable inputs during our discussions and compiled the movie. Srikanth, my friend did the background score and sound design. It was fun working with him in his professioanl studio, STUDIO 1234. He composed the beautiful song 'Daddy's gal' which was performed by Alisha Thomas and lyrics were written by Udhaya. Once the whole movie is edited, the final version is sent to Boise for Color correction and it was taken care by my (our) Triggerstreet friend Brandon Freeman (Hal e woode). Many thanks to him for his patience in listening to my ideas and giving a great result. As each and everybody in my cast & crew know, I demanded a lot from them and everybody responded with their best for this most satisfactory project of minetill date, Stinking Cigar. Last but not least, Iam thankful to my wife Rajitha who took care of our home and our sweet baby, Advait during my complete involvement in this project.

To view the movie click here
Asian American Institute Screens Arun's Short film in Chicago!

Excerpts from the press release

Asian American Institute Announces
2006 Milestone Honorees

CHICAGO--The Asian American Institute (AAI) will host its annual Milestone Awards Benefit on Wednesday, April 26th, 2006 at 5:30 p.m. at the Mid-America Club located at 200 East Randolph, 80th floor, Chicago, Illinois 60601.

"The annual Awards Benefit is a great celebration of leaders within the Asian American community," said Tuyet Le, Executive Director of AAI. Actually, my original plan was to shoot a different script which is 25 mins length but due to lack of time, I went for this three minutes little short film.

Nanda, who I came to know through his Singing talents and also with enormous experience in Entertainment business worked as a Cinematographer and editor in this film. His daughter Divya, who is a classical dancer and singer did the lead role. Veera assisted us in Cinematography and we shot the whole movie in Nanda's home.

I had the whole story board done and Nanda bought a little Dolly for this movie especially. While the shooting was about to start, the professional halogen lights whatever we were about to use for lighting burst off. That didn't stop us though...Veera went to a nearby store, bought some powerful white lights and it worked fine. Divya did the takes easily and her dancing skill came to her rescue,We finished the whole shooting in just three hours.

During post production, Nanda unfortunately fell ill and got admitted in the hospital. Thank God, he had a rought cut which I picked it up and edited by myself so that we would submit film to the festivals on time. Srikanth, did a awesome job in background score and came back with a mockery kinda music in just one day. Final package was ready and I did submit to two festivals. For our hardwork and efforts, it got selected in both the festivals.

IAAC has a small write up about the movie and myself, click this link to read the same and you can buy tickets for the same at this link.

'Stinking Cigar' in ManiaTV

Its ManiaTV time again.
ManiaTV is going to telecast my movie 'Stinking Cigar' under 'Too short for hollywood'. In todays mtv world its good to see a slowly paced and well thought out film. There was no hurry to this film and no rush. Even at this pace the film held my attention. The story was very poetic and quite moving. I liked the sort of ambiguous ending; where is she going to go, where is she going to end up? The visuals were very well done and obviously shot with great care and attention. I really liked the way you went about filming this as you described in your notes. Great idea to video it first and take photos for your storyboards. I liked the sound alot although i dont know if it was for the right reasons. It sounded very produced which gave the film an unreal quality. I dont know if you meant to do this or not. I liked you choice in music, and the voice over work was done very well. The story seemed to have sudden ending (mouthwash was a nice idea). I liked the flash back work and the first person view you gave. The camera work was good, and the lighting was perfect. Audio was clean and clear. Overall a verywell put together film that I enjoyed but seemed to end quick. Id give it a 7 out of 10. -- By Imaginationmachine, Posted on Wednesday, December 8, 2004

Stinking Cigar Brings Teenage Plight to Forefront

In Stinking Cigar, we are brought into a world of teen angst and uncertainty. Jennifer is properly portrayed as a young woman torn apart by the deception of family and unknown of the future. My only real complaint is that her lonliness could have been captured by more long shots, rather than the close ups used. This would give the viewer a more defined perception of the protagonists struggle. -- By whiteboyfunk82, Posted on Thursday, November 18, 2004

A wishful dream

great camera work that is for sure. The acting is solid. Definitly captures the feelings of tweens. Great writing and something that I haven't seen before on triggerstreet. This is a huge plus. I hope to see more stuff. Too long on the credits but that is just something that bothers me about most shorts. Best of luck and professional grade work. -- By theIndianMaiden, Posted on Tuesday, November 16, 2004

I am Jack's Voice Over
I just happened to come across your post in the messageboards before I reviewed this movie... One of my favorite movies (Fight Club) relies heavily on voice overs and just wouldn't be the same without it. Stinking Cigar is a well rounded movie with a lot of talent coming from a lot of different places. All I can say is stick to your vision, not everyone will agree, but from what I've read the majority does, including myself, so consider it a sucess! -- By jamescduff, Posted on Saturday, November 6, 2004

Great flick..
Great Flick.. For a suprisingly small amount of story and dialogue, this one went rather quickly. I suppose that has more to do with how well it was shot and scored. A very good job with the cigar, and the subject, Jennifer, was well cast. She seemed to understand her role pretty well. Well composed shots, a nice and easy film to watch. -- By InfoUp, Posted on Monday, October 25, 2004

Top Notch

This was movie executed in top notch style. I can really tell you put alot of blood, sweat and tears into the making of this movie. Brandon's (Hal e woode) colorization process put the cap on this "film look". The colors were rich and gorgeous and also gave depth to the movie that mini dv cannot, for the most part, deliver. Camerawork was nice all the way around - framing, shots, etc. Lighting - very nice. Sound - nice. Nice voiceover too. Editing - also nice, of course! The score written for this movie was awesome, as was the song "Daddy's gal". The beginning title hung on for a bit too long... I began to wonder if there were problems with the movie loading. Basically, that's the only mini thing I can bitch about! All in all, this is festival worthy! Thanks for the view. Oh... I might've failed to mention the acting. Acting was perfect. Good job, Aymee! -- By SeaMowse, Posted on Tuesday, October 19, 2004

Draws you in.

Coming of age/rebellion films are so regularly bad, this could have been a real stinker. But you pulled it off. Mainly, I think, due to the subdued, very real performance of the lead actress. She brought a calmness to the film that made me incredibly interested in her outcome. Your cinematography added a beauty to her story that drew me in even more. Music was well suited and very well encoded (the end credits sound great). My biggest issue with the film is the poorly encoded video. I really had to squint (sat back a few feet too) to get a decent, unpixelated version. Otherwise, great work. Keep it coming! RC -- By scobee, Posted on Monday, October 18, 2004

Brave attempt

This is a bit of a rarity these days. A film that wants the audience to fill in the gaps. Indeed it was a very adult treatment of a complex but universal theme: the transition to adulthoold. And the film's strengths outweigh its weaknesses. Some lovely shots and lighting, with nice use of visual metaphors (kicking of the bottle, mouthwash) shows a lot of thought went into the script. And a great central performance in the lead in what was not an easy role to perform. In fact the whole treatment had a depth that far outweighed its short running time. Key detraction for me was the music. It had a real 80's feel to it which did not fit with what I thought was a very contemporary view of the teenage years. Script wise I also was not sure I liked the new man. It provided a focus for Jennifer's angst and a reason for her emotions. Therefore, reducing the universality of the theme. And for me, it was tapping into the difficulties of growing up for us all, that is this film's strongest attribute. Well done. -- By neilg117, Posted on Saturday, October 16, 2004

review

First off, Arun's "Stinking Cigar" is a short film that looks amazing. The beautiful cinematography and camerawork made me want a DVX100 and their talents badly.Editing was also very good, as their choice was for a slow paced, heart felt story. The lead actress delivered her lines very well in voice over, and did a good job on the role.Thumbs up! -- By bskubs, Posted on Thursday, October 14, 2004

Profound and excellent! Great use of theme!

This film was excellent. It clearly depicted a phenomenon that is far too common in our modern culture. The film was eye-opening, profound, and sad all at the same time. The story was just long enough to get the message across that children long for their families to be whole and happy. I love how the girl used the cigar in vain. This movie deserves to be in the TriggerStreet competition! -- By arthouse, Posted on Wednesday, October 13, 2004

Not An Easy Ask Growing Up

Yet another production of Arun Vaidyanathan, one of the most prolific filmmakers in the TS community. I believe he has re-uploaded this short, for I reviewed it a few days ago and now found it again on my assignment list. No prob, I'll do my duty one more time :-)I've now got quite use to Achalam's style i.e. (Mr Vaidyanathan name on TS). I've watched and review quite a few shorts of his, and if I may say, I've seen his experience growing.'Stinking Cigar' is probably his most accomplished project. Cinematography has incredibly improved. No more strong shadows on white walls! This time we can get concentrated on the visuals because they well support the storyline, instead of being distracting to the eye. Audio levels are much better then on the previous 'Stinking Cigar' version I saw; I could actually clearly hear everything they say. Which is good, it doesn't always happen...Acting is ok, nothing superior but performance-wise this project wasn't let down. Editing was good. No gymnics, just pure cut and paste 101. And hey, the longest Synopsis ever! :-)Best of luck. -- By matteo prezioso, Posted on Thursday, September 30, 2004

End Of Innocence

This film shows something that so many parents fail to consider - the effect of divorce on their child. And there is even more to this film than that - it also shows with clarity what happens when parents fail to consider the consequences of setting the right example, and also how simple neglect can leave lasting, lifetime damage. Jennifer craves attention and love but knows she will not get it, even if she misbehaves. She smokes the end of a discarded cigar hoping to get any kind of reaction from her mother, even punishment - that would still be better than nothing. But nothing is all she gets. She has made an unwilling, early entry into adulthood, her childhood long gone. Young Aymee, under Arun's direction, is poised and confident in front of the camera. The combination of her VO and physical delivery of the character brings the story to life. Her reluctance to go home during the first half is clearly evident, and at the end she dreams of being punished - all these beautifully brought to life. Srikanth has delivered yet another beautiful, haunting score. Excellent camera work, every shot has been composed and shot perfectly. Al Sotomayor's brief appearance is creepy and scary - great job by him. Dave and Nerea acted in this movie.

I helped sotiris in camera and at the same time directed the movie.

It was around 11:30 in the night when we started shooting this and finished it in three hours. This three minutes movie had music too and it was performed by Srikanth. This was shot in Dave's home This movie was much better in lighting aspects and i was very happy after seeing the result of this movie.

Click on the following image to watch the movie.

Lowspeed_version

Highspeed_version

PRODUCTION CREDITS

Cast:- David Ellsi, Nerea Landa
Cinematography :- Sotiris Charalambous
Music :- Srikanth (Studio 1234)
Written and Directed By :- Arun Vaidyanathan
Online Magazines

The following news are published in Online Magazines.

THINNAI - A Popular tamil ezine published the selection of Br(a)illiant with a interview..

As you wish...

As you wish ... is close to my heart since it explores love in a different way. This movie is 'A poignant reminder that this is a time that will come eventually for all of us; make the most of your life until then!'.

Music has a great influence in one's mind and particularly flute has a soothing effect which in turn made me to create Bill as a flute musician. I also wanted music as the bridge between the hearts of Bill and Grace. Above all, I wanted to ask a simple question "If your spouse is in a lot of pain, will you be able to do the 'unthinkable' purely out of love ?".

I started coordinating things atleast two months before the shoot date. I found Rick pisarro through Trigger street , a wonderful actor and a nice friend and Selena is a talented actress. Rick has worked in some major productions . Al (Dr.john) has good experience in short films. Mr.Srikanth did the music in his professional Studio1234.Sotiris,Cinematographer and editor has contributed a lot in this production. Christine and Michael were the make up artists who transformed the cast into a different era. David Ellis, took care of the transportation and is the assistant cameraman. Steve assisted in crane and doing grip work. Johnna gave some wonderful ideas for production designing. Jeff Beres (A trigger street member), has done the Script consulting. Sumitra Ramjee did the continuity direction and generously provided lunch for the crew.

The weather was too cold during the days of shooting in New jersey and it was a great learning experience. I have to thank Raj,Vidya and Karthik for providing their house for filming, John and Penney for horses and Joe,Phil and John balog for antique car.

Last but not least, I thank my wife and parents for the wonderful support in this great journey of film making. This movie is not possible without the motivation of Trigger Street and some of the wonderful TS reviewers who encouraged me in my previous films.

PRODUCTION CREDITS

Cast:- Rick Pisarro,Selena Noelle,Al Sotomayor
Cinematography & Editing:- Sotiris Charalambous
Asst. Nachiket took care of the technical part well and music is done by a aspiring young musician, Jay Krishnan. The budget is Zero dollars and since myself and my wife took the acting part, there is no need of payment too :-)

Although people hate power cut, it might be a life saver at times for some body. People who has the ability to see are so used to electricity and light, but for blind people...their whole world is black out always! I wanted to try something different by not showing the face of the characters for most of the movie. I had wonderful cast Mike and Dinarte for this movie. This movie is a slapstick comedy with music.

We had fun in shooting this movie and this movie is well received during the screening. Music is composed by Srikanth at his professional studio 1234 at washington. The cinematography is done by David Ellis and editing is done by Sotiris. Nerea did the assistatant camera work.

This movie is honoured with 'Official selection in Annual program without frontiers - Philadelphia,2003' and awarded as one of the best movies in ' Chindanai vattam tamil arts short film festival,2004'.

PRODUCTION CREDITS

Cast:- Michael Rosengart, Dinarte freitas
Cinematography :- David Ellis
Asst. The best thing in NYFA is they give the camera, group a team and ask you to shoot a movie as soon as you joined the course.

Guru and Nerea acted in this two minutes film. Guru has done lots of stage plays and Nerea is a natural actress.

Its a silent film. Ramki, my friend who lives in Edison gave his apartment generously for filming purposes. Although some of the scenes came out little dark because of lighting problems (We are students!!!), the concept was appreciated and liked by my fellow class mates and instructor.

Out of sixteen students, only six of them showed movies ...all the other unlucky friends were not able to show their films because of complete darkness in their films.

PRODUCTION CREDITS

Cast:- Guru, Nerea Landa
Cinematography :- Sotiris Charalambous
Lighting :- David Ellis
Special Thanks :- Ramakrishnan
Written and Directed By :- Arun Vaidyanathan

Who am i ?

The world of film has always fascinated me. Even a low/no budget film, if blessed with good acting, a powerful script and clever direction, can make us laugh, cry, think, even change our basic life philosophies.

The serious art/business of cinema has woven itself into the fabric of our society. New technologies promise only more freedom for the creative person to implement their ideas into images others can watch and appreciate.

Creative directors are especially important since they oversee the creation of new worlds; worlds that began as fleeting images in their minds.

I am Arun Vaidyanathan, born and raised in Sirkali, a remote town in south India. I watched movies as a boy because it was the only entertainment In school, I studied music and dance and learned the thrill of an applauding audience. I also discovered a talent for Mimicry, which I pursued in college. This led to jobs in the television field. I wrote scripts, directed and performed in the leading television programs of South India (Sun TV & Raj TV). On Raj TV, I worked on a program called Hollywood Special where reviews about Hollywood films were given in my mother tongue Tamil. I loved that job and learned of many American films I would not have otherwise been exposed to.

Ever the pragmatist, I completed my education in Computers, allowing me to land a job with a leading software company which allowed me to come to the United States. I then completed the New York Film Academy program and have directed short films in my home state of New Jersey.
